Playa Cabeza de Toro – Cabeza de Toro

Playa Cabeza de Toro, known as the birthplace of the sun and named after its shape (head of the bull) lies between Playa Bavaro and Cabo Engaño, the easternmost point of the Dominican Republic. The small village, by the same name, is the home place of Dominicans and artisan shops. Many excursions are launched from the public beach area such as the Dolphin Explorer. It is not one of the most beautiful beaches as the water can be quite plagued with algae from the current and the boat traffic. The resorts do their best to keep the beach clean but it is an ongoing challenge. The only accommodations for tourists in this village are the all-inclusive resorts listed below.

Playa Cabeza de Toro lies between Playa Bavaro and Cabo Engaño, the easternmost point of the Dominican Republic. Next to Cabo Engaño is Playa Punta Cana.  It is a mere 10-minute drive from the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) and a 20-minute drive from Bavaro on the new highway.

While the all-inclusive resorts are beautiful with all the usual amenities one can dream of, the beach can be super crowded and leaves much to be desired.  The beach is long and narrow leaving very little space for the plentiful lounge chairs and sun lovers. If you are not a beach lover the pool areas are fantastic — that is if you are staying at the resort!

Swimming, relaxing, group exercising in the water, flyboat and many excursions to choose from.

Crowd Factor:

Can be VERY crowded in the high season and normally-crowded in the off season, especially at the resorts.

If you are not staying at an all-inclusive resort, there is a small public beach where you can bring a towel and sunbathe. Just follow the signs to the Dolphin Explorer.  There is a parking lot next to the entrance of the beach.

To Be Noted:

This is not an area to go out on your own.  It’s safe but there is not much to see and though the area is quaint it is a bit run down and unkempt.  The resort should arrange all excursions and transportation for you.  Please note again that many resorts have the name Punta Cana or Bavaro attached but these all-inclusives below are in Cabeza de Toro.
