Playa El Macao – Macao
Declared by UNESCO as one of the best in the Caribbean for its fine sand and abundant palm trees, this stunning beach is virtual eye candy!
Playa el Macao is 40 minutes from the Punta Cana Airport (PUJ), just south of Playa Uvero Alto and only 20 minutes from Bavaro via the new highway. It is very close to the all-inclusive resorts in Uvero Alto and Arena Gorda . ALL resorts make excursions to this idyllic beach of the Caribbean. If you are driving, it is very easy to find.
Natural, expansive, virginal and 3.2 miles long, Playa el Macao is what dreams are made of. As soon as arrive atop the hillcrest, all you will be able to say is… “WOW”! There is so much space to explore and not many people. On one end of the beach you can enjoy calm water perfect for swimming and watching the fishermen come in on their small boats loaded with red snapper (chillo) and Caribbean lobsters ready to be bought or cooked and served either on the beach or back under the rich foliage sipping an ice-cold beer! Very primitive but a delicious experience!
In the center of the beach (bay) as you come down from the hill, small surf schools, lounge chairs, horseback riding, paddle surfing, food, drinks and sunbathing, of course are all there to be had. On the far left, the waves increase for more advanced surfing and walking on the beach becomes magical.
Surf camp & lessons, swimming, horseback riding, buggy excursions, paddle surfing, primitive dining and wedding ceremonies.
Playa el Macao is never crowded because the beach is so big – except on weekends as it is a popular destination for Dominicans -At times, there will be excursions from the resorts with a busload of tourists and buggy excursions (which have pretty loud engines) which traverse the white dunes but there is plenty of room for everyone.
It is open to the public and very easy to find.
Follow the signs on the highway for Macao and as you exit the highway you will pass through a rural farm area and the little town of el Macao. The beach is 6 minutes off the highway.
